If I grew up knowing what I learned from Jeffrey Wolf Green Evolutionary Astrology about Aries, the 1st house, and Mars I suspect I’d been less lonely, more at peace with myself, and more accepting of my inner reality. Needless to say, I’d have been less confused!
With Venus in Aries or the 1st, relationship is in a state of becoming. Give yourself permission to NOT define this any further. From inside ourselves, it may seem like we Venus in the 1st/Aries have instinctual desires, needs, and attractions that are out of place within our complex psyches and/or the socially defined normal behaviors. At the heart of the matter having Venus in the 1st or Aries means that we are in a process of discovering our own relationship with ourself, and by extension how we relate to others.
With Venus in this position we can’t pre-determine feelings, attractions and personal needs! They just happen as life happens. Give yourself permission to see and understand what emerges and why. Give yourself permission to not define ones needs as static. Give yourself permission to not even know what future self will need in future nows.
Naturally, with Venus in the 1st or Aries we are instinctually attracted to this activity or that, to this idea or that, to connect with this person or that. This emerges in a moment based on a whole combination of present fluctuating conditions - mundane karma of all our actions leading up to this moment, the external and internal environmental conditions, including physiological, psychological, emotional, and spiritual AND our need to evolve!
For those of you who have Venus in the 1st or Aries: Have you ever been asked how you feel about something? Not just some thing, like a basketball. Let’s say you are asked about some proposed plans. Imagine your partner, family member or friends says:
“how about we go to the market, then come back and clean up, make dinner, and then eat in the back yard?”
What if you say “YES”? Sounds like a lot of restriction on freedom to spontaneously do what you want? But are we just selfish if we feel this way?!? But we don’t know what we might want to do yet! Venus in the 1st/Aries can agree to plans, and with great excitement! Let’s do it!
But we honestly have no clue what needs will emerge down the road. Do we give ourselves permission to rediscover what we want to do right now? Do we share this newly emerging need?
Perhaps we don’t give this permission because of internalized cultural conditioning. “That’s not appropriate, don’t be a flake!” Aries naturally squares Capricorn: in this conditioned reality of ‘western culture’ we are taught to know how we feel and what we want. But from Aries point of view, this is only known in the moment. Oh the pressure to know though.
I’m not saying to use this as an excuse for not acting in integrity and honoring others, that would be total exclusion of the Libra/7th polarity. All archetypes, expressed in a healthy way, will evolve to include their polarity.
Still, the question remains: Can we live in a free instinctual way while honoring self and other? What challenge does this pose within the psyche? The extend to which one acts on impulses or not will be a story told by the rest of the chart. For example, if Venus is in a mutable sign, it accentuates the changeability and unpredictability of where the next current of inspired action will take us. If Mars is in Capricorn there is likely to be some level of repression of these emerging needs and desires, overridden by desires to maintain one’s normal reality; resulting in heightened internalized tension.
Defining wants and needs can be challenging, as new needs cyclically emerge. It is okay to not have an answer to the question: “what do you want?” Try defining needs within the present moment.
Remember to give yourself permission to observe what these impulses are, what these attractions are, what these desires are, and what needs are emerging. Bear witness to yourself. Then remind yourself that this pattern is natural for you. Feel into your next action, use the force, may it be with you.
