The Taurus Polarity to Scorpio  Part I: Grounding: An Essential Part of Evolution

The Taurus Polarity to Scorpio
Part I: Grounding: An Essential Part of Evolution

In Evolutionary Astrology one of our guiding principles is that everything evolves through polarity. In Evolutionary Astrology ‘evolution’ correlates to the Pluto/Scorpio/8th house archetype. So, I posed this funny question: How does evolution evolve? Scorpio’s polarity Taurus(1) represents internalizing; taking into ourselves the evolutionary experience. Evolution proceeds as we merge with ‘something’ for a period of time. (Scorpio) Whatever the ‘something’ is exists external to ourselves. By internalizing the experience it becomes part of us, and we re-establish ourselves internally within the evolutionary process. This is the Taurus polarity active in our evolutionary process. This results in a necessary grounding and revitalizing. Without the Taurus internalizing within the evolutionary process, we enter into ungrounded Scorpio experiences of looping/spiraling, emotional and energetic burnout, and/or grasping for what we can not have.
Within the evolutionary process there is a whole spectrum of how one may be engaging with this process. Levels of engagement change slowly, quickly, and everything in between. At any given time, one may wholeheartedly choose to participate in the ongoing evolutionary processes in one’s life, one may have varied and changing degrees of participation and resistance, or one may be in total resistance to some part or all aspects of an evolutionary process. The resistance may be Scorpio or Taurus in nature.
Taurus resistance is observed when one is retreating within oneself and not actively participating with something outside of the self. Being able to retreat within is a healthy function of of the psyche. In certain circumstances, responding by pulling inward allows one to survive. However it is clear that when one’s mental, spiritual, emotional, and/or physical survival are not at stake, energetically retreating in similar situations gives clues to potential Taurean resistance.
Scorpio resistance is about wanting external circumstances to stay a certain way. The Scorpio resistance pattern is born out of the past merging and intertwinement with something or someone outside the self. In the face of this attachment and/or intertwined relationship changing, one is unable to let go, move on, accept circumstantial changes, and return to one’s self. Scorpio’s resistance to moving onward results in psychological looping; repetition in consciousness which manifests as repeating tracks in consciousness and the emotional body.
The ‘obsessive’ looping psychological dynamics associated with Scorpio are a natural psychological process by which one penetrates to the core of experiences which one has yet to fully understand and/or integrated into oneself. When one continues in this state over time the repeating loop in consciousness begins at affect one’s ability to participate in life in ‘the now.’ Grounded presence is noticeably gone. It is clear that grounding is absolutely necessary to prepare the self for the next steps along our evolutionary journey. Internalization and grounding (Taurus) are an essential components to the evolutionary process. (Scorpio) The question to ask ourself is how on Earth do we do this when we are pushed to or beyond our ability to deal with changes in life? The path back to self is certainly a healing journey which requires our active participation (Scorpio) in life and ongoing self effort. (Taurus)
Scorpio in Evolutionary Astrology represents evolving via some ‘thing’ outside of ourselves. The ‘thing may be a book, a person, a practice, sex, a group, a paradigm, a religion, a job or business, traveling, buying and selling, any activity or experience - a whatever - the point is that we engage over and over with this. At first, we experience empowerment and fulfillment. We are evolving from this experience and it is exciting! Over time, there is a behavioral history of repeated engagement with this experience. We keep returning to it, desiring the fulfillment, growth, and empowerment - the evolution. At some point in time, the experience changes. Of course this change can be sudden, abrupt and traumatic, slow and gradual, or anything in between. When we continue to want and seek out the same experience as it existed in the past, we begin to loop and spiral.
Over and over, it’s the Scorpio record on repeat. Here we go again, and again,….aaaaand again! If we can pause and tune into ourself, we can feel and observe it happening; yet it continues to repeat! Hello Taurus, our missing puzzle piece. This loop or circuit is us energetically extending out, not getting the hit, and looping back to self. The thing is we have not been stopping when we return to self. Instead of allowing a pause, we are repulsed by the feeling of returning to self without this thing. This pulse shoots us away from ourself and we are energetically looping right back outside ourselves seeking. It’s becomes an addiction, an obsessive behavior pattern. If our loop could begin to include a slow down and sinking back into self, the loop back outside of ourself would begin to evolve and change again. Taurus in polarity to Scorpio is telling us to allow this loop to include the return to self. Re-learn to pause with oneself and then expand into this pause. We are needing to withdraw and go inward. We are needing to do the Taurus slow down; to slow down long enough to put our emotional and mental tapes on pause. This is the Taurus inner path, essential within all evolutionary processes.
Now let’s say that one is unable to slow within the loop long enough to return to oneself. Prolonged resistance to evolutionary forces produces increasingly cataclysmic events throwing one back onto oneself; a necessity to break the psychological cycle. As JWG would say “the famous rug is pulled out from under the famous feet.” What we want and desire is gone from us. At times, it makes no sense why we are experiencing what we are, but we are in it. In fact, it is quite common, as most practiced astrologers have seen, that when one is in intense evolutionary period (perhaps “heavy Pluto transits”) the why is unclear and what it will be like on the other side is unclear. In these types of situations, the Taurus polarity is the Earth, it is the ground where we get to land; where our feet touch down.
When we begin to spiral into our hour of darkness we are not finding any ground. We are wanting to stop falling, but we become stuck in this emotional looping in reaction to the rug being pulled out. As this progresses, it becomes more than looping, it is spiraling into dark places. Oh Taurus ground, how do we land and stop the storm of emotions? Where is calm on the sea of pain? These are some of the most painful things to be in and/or to witness. We have seen friends and family members get caught in the spiral. We know of this aspect of self and it is possible anyone can get caught up in this depending on inner reactions to external circumstances. We have witnessed evil spawn out of these places. If one is to become the phoenix and rise from one’s own ashes, one first requires the Taurus land from which one can rise from. Sometimes this may be straight up crashing and burning, but at least there was a crash. With no ground at all, there is no crash. At this point, surrender may be allowing the crash and beginning to find one’s way out of the spiral. It is only from within one self which we rise again. This is the Taurus inner path, essential within all evolutionary processes.

(1)When I say Taurus, I mean Taurus/2nd House/inner side of Venus. When I say Scorpio, I mean Scorpio/8th house/Pluto. While we approach houses, signs and planets differently, the archetypes are the same for all 3 in the Evolutionary Astrology paradigm I use, which is rooted in Jeffrey Wolf Green’s Evolutionary Astrology.

Polarity Is a by product of linear thought light is moving from all angles and positions. The perception of negative and positive is a human condition Non existent in nature We are the processor Our perception translates into negative or positive

Greetings Bradley, I find this article extremely helpful in understanding events in my life in the late 70's and early 80's. I have been seeking understanding for many years of these events, which started with a "flash of fire" (Uranus in Scorpioand semisextile to Neptune in Saggitarius conj NN, and Pluto in Libra.
Thanks.
Stuart

Thanks Bradley for the insights! It has helped me understand a constant and pervasive theme in my life! I have a Taurus South Node in the 2nd House and Scorpio North Node conjunct Pluto in the 8th house! I've actually struggled very hard with grounding but I've noted how very important it is. Great article!
